Guide

Everything about Game Night Studio in one place: how the site works, and how to play each of our 49 games.

Getting started

Four steps from nothing to playing with a friend.

  1. 1Make an accountIt is free and only needs a username, an email and a password. Friends who only want to join one game can skip this.
  2. 2Pick a gameBrowse the games on the home page. Use the search box and the filters to narrow them down.
  3. 3Share the linkStarting a game gives you an invite link and a game code. Send either to a friend.
  4. 4Play liveMoves show up on both screens within a second or so. There is nothing to download.
Every game on the home page has its own card. Press Start & invite on the one you like.

It works in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, so everyone can use whatever they have. No adverts, no tracking cookies.

Accounts and guests

Sign up for the full experience, or just join a game as a guest.

Registered players

  • Start your own games and invite people
  • Keep a win and loss record for every game
  • Earn badges and appear on the leaderboard
  • Choose an avatar, add friends and get alerts
  • See your games in progress on the dashboard

Sign up from the Sign up page. If you come back later, use Log in.

Guests

If a friend sends you an invite link you can join with just a display name. No email and no password needed.

  • You can play the game you were invited to
  • Guests do not get a record, badges, friends or a leaderboard place
  • Some games are set to registered players only by whoever started them
  • Guest accounts are temporary and tidied away after a while

Like it? Sign up for free and your next games count.

Your profile and avatar

Other players see your avatar on games, in chat, on the leaderboard and in friend lists.

Initial, icon, emoji or your own picture.

Open Account and look at the Profile card. You can pick any of these:

  • Initial: your first letter on a coloured circle.
  • Icons and emoji: search for one you like.
  • My picture: upload a photo (when the site allows it). Crop it so your face fits the circle.
  • Colour: the background colour behind your icon, emoji or initial.

Your public profile page shows your record for every game, your badges, and how you do against whoever is looking at it. Tick Keep my stats private if you would rather not appear on leaderboards or show your record and badges.

Starting a game

Only registered players can start games. Guests can join them.

  1. 1Find your gameSearch by name, or use the chips to filter by type (Arcade, Board, Card and more) and by who can play (Solo, Co-op, Head to head, Group).
  2. 2Press Start & inviteYou land in the game lobby, with your invite link and an 8-character game code.
  3. 3Choose how to playSome games ask for a mode (solo, co-op, versus), a difficulty or a target score. The host picks these.
  4. 4Invite someoneCopy the link, share it from your phone, or invite a friend from the Friends page.
  5. 5Start the gameWhen everyone has joined, the host presses Start. Arcade games count down from three first.
The invite link and game code. Either one lets a friend in.

Playing the computer

On a game card, Play the computer starts a game straight away against a computer player. Choose Easy, Medium or Hard first. Games against the computer are for practice and fun: they do not count towards the leaderboard.

Registered players only

When guests are allowed, the game card has an Allow guests box. Untick it to make that game for registered players only.

Joining a game

Three ways in.

An invite link

Open the link a friend sent you. Press Join the game.

A game code

On your dashboard, type the 8-character code into Join with a code and press Go.

A friend invite

Friends can invite you straight into a game. It appears on your dashboard, and you get an alert if you turned notifications on.

Watching a game

Signed-in players can usually watch a game that is already in progress by opening its link. You see the board but cannot move, and the players can see that someone is watching. Watching can be switched off for some games.

If a game is full, or it has finished, the link will tell you. Ask your friend to start a new one.

Solo, co-op, head to head

Each game shows who it is for, using these labels.

Solo Play on your own, either against the computer or just for a high score.
Co-op Work together with a friend, sharing the lives and the goal.
Head to head You against one other player. Winner takes the point.
Group of 3 or more Three or more players in the same game.

Playing a game

What you will see on the game page.

The banner tells you what is happening. Players are on the right, with the chat below.
The bannerThe coloured bar above the board says whose turn it is, and tells you when the game ends and who won.
PlayersEveryone in the game, with their avatar. The player whose turn it is is highlighted.
ChatTalk to the other players while you play. Messages have a length limit and a short pause between them. Some games have chat switched off. Chat is removed when the game is cleared away.
RematchWhen a game ends, the host can start a rematch with the same people with one press.
Resign, draw and leaveGames like Chess and Draughts let you resign or offer a draw. Leave game takes you out. You cannot rejoin a game you have left.
SoundArcade games have a Sound on/off button. Browsers only start sound after you tap or press something.
Coming back laterGames in progress wait for you. Open the games in progress bar at the top of the page, or your dashboard, to carry on.

Controls

Each game's guide below lists its controls. In general: tap or click for board and card games, arrow keys (or W A S D) for arcade games, and on-screen buttons appear on phones and tablets.

Your dashboard

Your home base once you are signed in.

  • Your games: everything in progress, waiting for a friend, and recently finished.
  • Join with a code: type a friend's 8-character code to get in.
  • Start a new game: the game cards are here too, so you can press Start & invite without going back to the home page.
  • Waiting and finished games can be removed with the button beside them. Removing an unfinished game takes you out of it.

Friends and invites

Registered players can add friends from the Friends page.

  1. 1Add a friendType their username and press Send request.
  2. 2They acceptRequests appear on the Friends page. A small number in the menu shows waiting requests.
  3. 3Invite themPick one of your open games next to their name and press Invite.

The Friends page also lists the requests you have sent, and your blocked players. Block someone if you do not want requests or invites from them. You can unblock them later. Friends are for registered players, so guests do not have the page.

Leaderboard

See who is winning, overall or in one game.

Example only. Pick a time period, then a game.
  • Pick All time, Last 30 days or Last 7 days and then All games or one game.
  • Players are ranked by number of wins. If two players have the same wins, the one who played fewer games ranks higher.
  • Only games against other people count. Games against the computer and games as a guest do not.
  • You only appear once you have a win, and not if you chose to keep your stats private.
  • Press a name to open that player's profile.

Achievements and badges

Badges you earn just by playing.

Open Achievements from your dashboard to see every badge. Earned ones are in colour, ones you have started show a progress bar, and the rest are waiting for you. Badges appear on your profile too, unless you keep your stats private.

How rare is it?

Every badge shows how many players have earned it, with a rarity label:

From most to least often earned.
  • Common: half of players or more
  • Uncommon: 20% or more
  • Rare: 5% or more
  • Epic: 1% or more
  • Legendary: under 1%

Themes, sound and extras

Little things that make the site nicer to use.

Light and darkChoose a theme in Account, or use the small theme button in the page header.
Search and filtersOn the home page, search by name or tap a chip to show one kind of game. Games you played lately appear in a Recently played strip.
Game picturesGame cards can show a faint picture of the game behind them, to help you spot the one you want.
Seasonal funAt certain times of year the site may switch on a Christmas or Autumn look, with pixel snow or falling leaves, decorations and background sound. If there is a sound button at the bottom of the page, tap it to start the music, and use the slider to set the volume. It is off until you ask for it, and your volume is remembered.
Add to your home screenOn a phone or tablet, use your browser's Add to Home Screen (or Install) option to open the site like an app.
OfflineYou need a connection to play. If it drops, the site shows a friendly offline page and reconnects when you are back.
Keyboard and screen readersMenus, buttons and forms work with the keyboard. Press Tab on any page and choose Skip to content to jump to the main part.

Privacy and your data

No adverts, and no tracking cookies.

  • Your email address is only used for your account and is never shown to other players.
  • Other players see your display name and avatar, your public profile (unless you keep stats private) and your game chat.
  • You can delete your account at any time from the Account page.
  • Read the full details in the Privacy Policy, Terms & Conditions and Cookie Policy.

Questions and answers

My friend cannot join my game.

Check they have the whole link or all 8 characters of the code. If you made the game for registered players only, they need an account. Games that are full or finished cannot be joined.

Nothing is happening in my game.

Check you are connected, then refresh the page. Your game is saved. In arcade co-op, make sure the host has the page open and in front.

Why is there no sound?

Browsers wait for a tap or key press before they allow sound. Press a key or tap the screen, and check the Sound button is on and your device is not muted.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Games have touch controls, and arcade games show on-screen buttons. Turning the phone sideways gives more room for some games.

Why am I not on the leaderboard?

You need at least one win against another person. Games against the computer, and games as a guest, do not count, and nor do games if your stats are private.

Can I change my username?

Your username stays the same, but you can change your display name any time in Account.

I left a game by mistake.

You cannot rejoin a game you left, but the host can start a new game or a rematch for you.

I forgot my password.

On the Log in page choose Forgot your password and enter your email. If the site can send email you will get a link to choose a new password. If you do not see that link, ask the site owner (the Contact us link at the bottom of any page) to help you get back in.
